He holds their joined hands aloft, pulling her in so her elbow is resting on his chest. She is bemused but doesn’t question him or complain about the awkward position. She suspects she knows what this is about. His eyes sweep over their meshed fingers and at his own thumb as he rubs it over her skin. He releases, then twines their fingers in a different way.

He makes a slightly discontented noise and shifts their fingers again.

“I can’t remember which way we used to do this,” he mutters. “I never had to think about it before.”

“Well, it’s been a long time since you had these hands,” Rose tries to say seriously, knowing if she gives in to the giggles that are lurking just under the surface, he will be hurt and offended. Some things never change. No matter how many centuries it might have been.

“True,” he says, but the idea doesn’t seem to help.

“Really though....” she trails off.

He finally frees her hand and rolls to face her. “Yes?”

She lets a small smirk quirk her mouth. “I don’t think we ever had one set way of holding hands.”

“No?” His brow furrows in thought.

“I think we were mostly too busy running for our lives to worry about our hand-holding techniques."

“Really?”

His uncertainty is as endearing as always.

“Yeah,” she says firmly. “And maybe you should stop worrying about our finger-meshing technique when there are so many other techniques you could be working on.”

“Oh?”

“I just figured after eighteen hundred years, you must have picked something up. Or,” she adds cheekily, “we could get a book or something if you were just bragging about those ‘moves’ of yours.”

“I, Rose Tyler,” he says darkly, “never brag.”

“Yeah? Prove it.”

She grins at him in a way that he can never resist and he moves to do just that.
